Gennadii Iakovlev

Central European University

Gennadii is a Postdoctoral Fellow at CEU DI Global Forum Colombo Hub, where he explores how LLMs can reshape social science research. Collaborating with renowned scholars such as Murat Somer, Andreas Schedler, and other fellows, Gennadii develops cutting-edge methods for understanding political discourse. His current project measures the affective elite polarization, using parliamentary speeches from the last two decades to gauge how politicians express likes toward their in-groups and dislikes toward out-groups. Employing ChatGPT 4.0, he identifies critiques not merely through individual words but by analyzing contextual cues, generating human-readable explanations for each interpretation. This EU-wide dataset can eventually evolve into a global index of affective polarization, accompanied by publicly available visualization tools. Gennadii earned his PhD in Political Science from the European University Institute, specializing in autocratic politics, regime change, and democratic backslides.
