BCHS: Why fighting hate today must prioritize protecting democracy

Online Event
3:00 pm
Please join the Bard Center for the Study of Hate (BCSH) as we welcome Rachel Strom, Nina Rifkind and Amy Rifkind.

Rachel’s mother, the late Margot Stern Strom was the founder of Facing History and Ourselves, a Holocaust-based anti-bias educational program (for which she received an honorary degree from Bard College in 2001). Nina and Amy’s father, the late Robert Rifkind, was a lawyer, and president of the American Jewish Committee, working to combat antisemitism and hatred. Their children also oppose hate, but through something more basic and essential: protecting due process and the integrity of the legal system. BCSH director Kenneth Stern, who knew the parents and the children, will moderate a discussion between them. Rachel Strom was on a team that drafted an amicus brief for Jewish organizations on behalf of Rümeysa Öztürk, the Tufts student whisked away supposedly for co-authoring an op-ed. Amy Rifkind and Nina Rifkind wrote a letter to the law firm Paul, Weiss, after it capitulated to threats from the Trump administration, powerfully stating how this action violated the vision of the firm set down by its founder, their grandfather, Judge Simon Rifkind.
