Bruce Chilton

Bruce Chilton is the Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Bard College. A scholar of early Christianity and Judaism, Ph.D. Cambridge (St John’s College), he wrote the first commentary on the Aramaic version of Isaiah (The Isaiah Targum), as well as academic studies that analyze the New Testament in its Judaic context (including Rabbi Jesus; Rabbi Paul; Mary Magdalene; The Herods; and Aramaic Jesus). On that basis, he has directed many projects that develop interreligious dialogue, resulting in volumes such as Abraham’s Curse and Altruism in World Religions. He has taught in Europe at the Universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, and Münster, and in the United States at Yale University and Bard College. At Bard, he founded and directs the Institute of Advanced Theology.
