Payám Foroughi

American University of Central Asia

Payam Foroughi received his his PhD in political science from the University of Utah with a dissertation on the comparative application of the UN anti-torture norm in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Aside from teaching at five institutions of higher learning in North America and Central Asia, Afghanistan, and the Midde East, Foroughi has a number of years of work experience as project manager and consultant with international organizations and businesses. Early in his career, he was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco, an intern with USAID in El Salvador, and a business journalist in the U.S. His research and writings have, inter alia, appeared with the Economist Group, Freedom House, International Crisis Group, Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, University of Hamburg's OSCE Yearbook, Central Asian Survey, Journal of Postcommunist Economies; Civil Wars, Europe-Asia Studies, and, most recently upcoming in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia 2024.
