Leadership in Times of Crisis Annual Conference: Creating Safe Spaces for Marginalized Voices

In a world marked by uncertainty, amplifying the voices of marginalized students has never been more urgent — and that conviction stood at the heart of the GHEA21 Leadership in Times of Crisis Conference. Held on April 12, the gathering united 95 students from across the GHEA21 network, bringing together young people who navigate extraordinary challenges daily yet remain committed to growth, connection, and leadership.

Meaghan Balzar, Academic Director at the Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP), led the day's sessions, weaving together tools for self-awareness and effective communication. Her approach created space not just for skill-building, but for genuine human connection. "In a time of global challenge, the conference brought together students and staff to develop skills that strengthen connection — an experience that was both powerful and inspiring," Balzar reflected.

Throughout the day, students were invited to explore their individual strengths, identify their communication styles, and build bridging frameworks for cross-cultural collaboration. The result was something rarer than a workshop — it was a sanctuary. A safe, inclusive environment where students' lived experiences were not just acknowledged but honored, and where the weight of their daily realities was met with both structure and compassion. Participants left with more than tools; they left with a renewed sense of direction and a reaffirmed belief in the power of youth-led change.

Nowhere was that impact more vivid than in the words of a student joining from Afghanistan. "Even though we are facing many challenges every day, this session reminded me that my voice still matters and that I can support others in small but meaningful ways," she shared. "It is not easy for me to find such opportunities in Afghanistan. Having this online access is life-changing for me and other girls."

Her words capture something essential about what GHEA21's work makes possible: access. Access to community, to tools, to the radical idea that your voice matters — even when the world around you insists otherwise.

The conference was a powerful reminder that true leadership is not simply about responding to external crises. It is about cultivating inner resilience, understanding your place within a larger human community, and showing up for others with compassion and intention. In that sense, every student who logged on that day was already leading.
