Advocating for Our Future

Written by Maryam Hussaini‘26, AUCA, majoring in International and Comparative Politics

The Qatar Connections Civic Engagement Fellowship Program is helping students master real-world skills such as building an online presence for a successful job search and negotiating in the workplace and everyday settings. Supported by Education Above All (EAA), two recent workshops brought together students across the GHEA21 and beyond to learn from seasoned professionals.

Dr Shaheema Hameed Kunhimon led a workshop for Afghan and Palestinian students on “Building Professional Identity in the Digital Age: Empowering Students Through LinkedIn and Personal Branding”. Students explored professional identity, the importance of building a professional online presence, and using LinkedIn strategically for future academic and career opportunities. Participants explored how personal branding can support professional visibility, networking, and long-term career growth.

Dr Amir Dhia led a second workshop on  “Everyday Negotiations, Extraordinary Confidence!” which brought together more than 80 students across the GHEA21 network. The workshop focused on helping participants understand negotiation strategies, communication approaches, and preparation techniques for both professional and everyday settings. Participants explored the role of negotiation in interviews, workplace communication, business interactions, and daily life situations.

One student, Noura AbuShraim, noted: “A must-attend for every student! It genuinely bridges the gap between academic business theories and the real-world skills needed to advocate for ourselves in our future careers.”

These sessions served as a reminder of the impact of collaborative partnerships between Qatar Connections, EAA, GHEA21, and the Bard Center for Civic Engagement in supporting student leadership, empowerment, and professional development initiatives across international scholarship communities.
