OSUN Course

Register for Summer Courses, Including Cultural Politics in the African Diaspora + Global Freedom of Expression

Deadline Expired on May 15, 2023
OSUN is offers 24 Summer Courses this year in the areas of Civic Engagement, Democractic Practice, Human Rights, Sustainability and Climate, Inequalities, Arts and Society, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Two of the courses that students can consider are:
"Cultural Politics and Performance in the African Diaspora" and "Global Freedom of Expression"

"Cultural Politics and Performance in the African Diaspora" is taught by Queen Meccasia Zabriskie of Bard College Annandale. The course investigates cultural politics and performance in different Africana communities. It examines the impact of major events like the transatlantic slave trade, colonization, and different artistic and social movements and will examine different conceptualizations of diaspora, focusing on race, class, gender, sexuality, and nationality. The course focuses on three  intersectional analyses of cultural politics and performance in Panama, Senegal, and the United States of America. The course will ask what role have culture, the arts, and performance played in struggles over power in different communities on the continent of Africa and in the Diaspora? What are the points of divergence and convergence between these different struggles?

"Global Freedom of Expression" is taught by Jonathan Freedman of Bard College Annandale. The course provides students with a foundational understanding of free speech and the freedom of expression in the global, digital era. It will introduce students to a broad range of topics, including: human rights conventions and laws, the modern history of free expression, and contemporary issues related to the Internet, protest, political dissent, hate, and freedom of the press. The course will examine intersectional case studies, where contemporary national contexts are used to highlight global thematic trends. One thread of the course will draw on the work of PEN America and the human stories of writers, artists, and journalists who dare to use free expression to confront autocratic regimes. Another thread will aim to contextualize current tensions surrounding free expression and social justice activism in the United States and other Western countries.

Priority deadline to register is May 15
